Allergic rhinitis, commonly called hay fever, is a reaction that causes sneezing, congestion, and itchy eyes. It occurs when your immune system overreacts to harmless airborne substances like pollen, dust mites, or pet dander. Unlike a cold, it is not caused by a virus.

Common Symptoms

Symptoms usually start right away when you breathe in the allergen.

Repeated sneezing

• Runny or stuffy nose

• Itchy nose, mouth, or throat

• Watery or red eyes

• Post-nasal drip (mucus dripping down the throat)
